AS mentioned in previous blog posts, 80% of Koreans agree there is a generational issue at their workplace and 65% of them are stressed out by it. So just How do Korean Companies feel about Gen Z employees? 

Gen Zs are beginning to enter the workplace in Korea and if it hasn’t happened already, it is just a matter of time before they fill the ranks of manager, leaders, and CEO. 

Is it all bad? Or are there some who appreciate the qualities Gen Z employees bring to their organisation? 

Recent research conducted by Saramin, one of the biggest job portal in South Korea, asks the question of How do Korean Companies feel about Gen Z employees? While they found that most employers shared similar complaints toward Gen Z employees, there are also qualities that Gen Z employees bring that they appreciated.

Not taking responsibility is the no. 1 complaint employers have toward their Gen Z employees, followed by not taking others into consideration and lack persistence and patience.

Here are the top 5 qualities that Gen Z brings to the workplace according to Korean employers.

Top-quality that employers appreciate is competency in the latest technology, followed by fast decision making and having a wide range of personal and professional experiences. 

What to make of this?

We felt that while managers and supervisors certainly have the right to set expectations on their Gen Z employees, we would like to remind leaders that there are preemptive and interventive measures companies can take to maintain work relationships as well as performance across generations in the workplace. 

  • Better hiring process. 

All 5 of the complaints are behavior-based. Have a robust and consistent hiring process that not only focus on the academic or professional achievement (the WHAT) of your Gen Z candidate but also focus on behaviors (the HOW) and personal aspiration (the WHY)  

  • Learning and Development Programme on soft skills

Gen Zs are not lacking in education nor technical skills, there is a wide range of platforms for them to acquire knowledge on there. Companies can supplement their learning and development with frequent 360 feedback from their peers to raise self-awareness, soft skills learning opportunities on topics such as influencing, conflict management. 

Of course, Gen Z employees will also need the coaching and guidance of managers, and leaders in the company to be able to articulate their expectations as well as give constructive feedback and guidance on their development. 

Here’s hoping that in 2022, when we look at how Korean companies Feel about Gen Z employees, we may have some very different answers.
